AI companions: microphone, internet and data
A conversation feature is also a data service. Control of audio and memory belongs in the product decision.
Ask for answers to four questions: when does the device listen, where is the conversation processed, what is stored, and how is it deleted? A private-looking exterior or hidden microphone answers none of them. The manufacturers' current descriptions provide different answers, which should be compared for the version you are considering.
Internet may be part of the core function
Lovense states that AI Doll requires internet access for most functions, including conversation and memory. The FAQ also says interaction data is stored on Lovense servers and may be processed by authorised providers, including AI providers. This is manufacturer information; we have not conducted a technical data analysis.
A listening icon is not a microphone switch
Lovense describes audible signals and system notifications about connection and active listening, depending on settings and device status. Our purchase question is how the microphone is switched off physically or in software, and how this can be checked. A described indicator does not itself document a mechanical switch.
Local-first can still involve the cloud
KOIBOT's privacy policy says sensitive processing is prioritised on the device where possible. It also mentions AI, speech and cloud providers and international processing. The policy describes export and requests to delete conversations and memory. ROLA is used here as an example of a conversational companion; the manufacturer prohibits sexual use.
Disconnection and deletion are two different questions
SEDOLL's operating guide describes how to unlink Annika from an account and cancel the subscription. These actions do not in themselves answer when conversation data is deleted. Obtain the manufacturer's written answer on retention periods, deletion and any backups before sharing information you want to keep private.
Private memory must be explainable
Irontech describes IronAI with individual account pairing, private memory and setup through an app and Wi-Fi. This documents the manufacturer's feature description; it is not an independent guarantee about data processing. Ask for a policy that explicitly covers AI conversations, rather than only shop orders.
Save the answers with the purchase
Note the power switch, listening indicator, internet requirements, deletion function, ongoing cost and which features remain without a subscription. Clarify unknown points for the exact software version. Treat claims about encryption and privacy as information to investigate; they do not mean a product can never fail.
Our assessment
Choose a service whose terms and controls you understand. Listening, memory and server dependence should be as clear as the product's material and movements.
